Montenegro/Bosnia holiday – NEW FOR 2019!
“One of Europe’s euro-stars that is beginning to glisten as brightly as neighbouring Croatia and Montenegro…Bosnia-Herzegovina is packed with cultural gems, and trips to Sarajevo take you back not only to fine ancient civilisations but show off fine contemporary ones too.” Responsible Travel, 2018
2019 departure dates: any Sunday or Wednesday, May-September
We live and breathe Montenegro – it has a startling array of attractions – but we believe that an apple is always only part of a tree, and as such we can’t limit ourselves just to one amazing country!
Just over the border is the wild and surprising Bosnia. Possibly the least visited of all the countries in the former Yugoslavia, Bosnia, too has epic landscapes, fascinating towns and intriguing history ready to be revealed to the more curious traveller. This tour mixes Montenegro and Bosnia in a perfect way, combining cultural city visits as well as activities out in pristine nature. The mission of this program is for guests to discover the real Balkan spirit, lifestyle, traditions and cultural complexity as well as natural beauty!
The program is based on 4 active days – 2 walking tours in Bosnia (Lukomir and Diva Grabovica), one walk in Montenegro (Durmitor NP) and rafting tour on Tara River, in the second deepest canyon in the whole world. The grade of difficulty for each tour is easy to moderate, with no technical demands. All activities are guided by experienced and licensed Montenegrin and Bosnian guides. Excluding active days, the program includes 3 days of visiting the sights of Mostar and Sarajevo, Old Town Počitelj and Vrelo Bune.
All transport, accommodation and meals are included, as well as 24/7 qualified guides who will collect you from your location and bring you back to Podgorica Airport at the end of your trip.
Your Guides: Vuk and Bojana are a brother and sister team who have worked with Undiscovered Montenegro for the last 4 years. They both have a passion for the outdoors and for the North of Montenegro in particular. The more remote the area, the more likely they are to be found exploring it! Vuk and Bojana speak excellent English and have full mountain guide qualifications.
Day 1 – Transfer to Mostar
Mostar, and its 16th century Old Bridge, is one of the most famous places in Bosnia, now under UNESCO protection following its reconstruction. An amazing arch above the Neretva river, it is surrounded with fortresses and towers, representing one of the best examples of Ottoman architecture in the Balkans. The authentic spirit of The Old Town, great food and the hospitality of the local people are just some of the highlights. Overnight in local apartments. Group dinner.
Day 2 – Vrelo Bune and Počitelj
Situated in the south, Mostar has very good position for exploring natural and cultural sights of this part of the country. Just about one hour of drive from the city we will reach Počitelj, a magical place located in the narrowest point of Neretva Valley. On the way back we will visit Vrelo Bune – the mighty spring of the river that babbles directly from an impressive rock. For many centuries fortresses and towers of Pocitelj protected the land from invaders from the sea. Huge walls, high towers, mosques and authentic old houses made from rocks in 20th century attracted famous painters, authors and poets. Now restored after the tragedies of the 1990s it is now in perfect condition. Vrelo Bune is in the group of biggest natural attractions of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Nearby Blagaj was once the residence of Bosnian rulers in the medieval age. During the Ottoman occupation, dervish tekke was established there, perfectly fitted in the environment. Overnight back in Mostar. Group dinner.
Day 3 – Tour to Diva Grabovica, transfer to Sarajevo
Situated about 30 km from Mostar, Čvrsnica Mountain offers plenty of opportunities for passionate hikers. The tour is an easy to moderate route next to Diva Grabovica canyon, that will show us some stunning views. Almost all the time we will walk through the forest, enjoying untouched nature and fresh air. Our Bosnian guide will tell us legends related to this mountain, during some 5-6 hours of nice walk. Hiking distance: 15km. Grade: easy to moderate. Overnight at Kandilj Pension. Group dinner.
Day 4 – Sarajevo
So finally we are in Sarajevo! Once upon a time it used to be the real heart of the ex-Yugoslav people, now it’s the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, a town of millions of stories and legends. Established as a typical Ottoman town in the end of 15th century, it was the crossroad of most important trading routes during the next four centuries. Our lovely local guide will show you some of most important points of the city – Old Town, City Center, City Hall, the place of assassination of Austrian Duke Franz Ferdinand, telling us about the past and present life of Sarajevo. The walk through the city will be complete with an amazing taste of Bosnian cuisine and great local beer! Overnight at Kandilj Pension. Group dinner.
Day 5 – Lukomir Village Loop
Lukomir is the most remote village in the whole country, situated on an amazing slope above Rakitnica Canyon. Situated at 1,495m above sea level, it’s the highest populated place in the whole of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Our walk from Umoljani to Lukomir will show you beautiful sights of the canyon, amazing valleys and mountain peaks. You will also see the far summits of Zelengora, Treskavica, Maglic and even Durmitor Mountain in Montenegro! The night is spent in the amazing ambience of Umoljani village. The nice accommodation, simple charm of local hospitality and tasty Bosnian pie will explain why we stopped here! Overnight at Pansion Umoljani. Group dinner.
Day 6 – White Water Rafting
The Tara Canyon is the deepest in the whole of Europe (second deepest in the world, just after Grand Canyon in Colorado) – the highest point above the canyon floor is 1,331 metres over your head! Because of its beauty, clear water and unspoiled nature, the Tara Canyon deservedly boasts UNESCO World Natural Heritage status. The grade 3-5 rapids (depending on the season) are suitable for almost anyone aged 9 and older and will provide you with a thrill you won’t forget in a hurry! Tour duration: 2-3 hours. Please note that groups of fewer than 6 should expect to join another rafting group. Overnight at Zvono Apartments, group dinner.
Day 7 – Hiking in Durmitor National Park
This day is spent hiking to Prutaš Peak. Embellished by soft stripes of ridges, deep-green and adorned by oblique layers called “prutovi” (wands) – that gave the mountain its name, this peak for many people is the most special and the most beautiful peak of Durmitor Mountain. Hiking distance: 15km. Grade: easy to moderate. Overnight at Zvono Apartments, group dinner.
Day 8 – return to Podgorica
Prices include all accommodation in 3-star local apartments, transfers, meals and guided excursions.
This is a group holiday that can also be tailor-made on request. Maximum Group size of 6.
