Best of Montenegro Active Holiday

“Couldn’t fault any aspect of this and nothing seemed too much trouble. [An] inspirational holiday…we would definitely go back!”

2019 departure dates: any Sunday or Wednesday

There’s no time to get bored on an active holiday in Montenegro! Whether you love adventure, find beaches a bore, or just want to stay in shape and have fun, the staggering beauty and variety of outdoor activities in this tiny country will give you a holiday to remember.

The first 7 nights are spent at Lake Skadar National Park, immersed in wild natural beauty as you hike to natural springs, caves and fishing villages, plunge into waterfalls, kayak along carpets of waterlilies and taste some of the finest red and white wines from Montenegro’s Napa Valley! Your accommodation is the beautiful Villa Miela, a restored farmhouse just outside picturesque little Virpazar, the lake’s main access point, and just a 30 minute drive to the Adriatic sea. This leg of the holiday is self-catering apart from your welcome dinner on the first night.

The other 3-7 nights take in Montenegro’s incredible and mountainous North – and it’s not just the duration that’s flexible (we offer programs lasting 3, 4 and 7 nights). You can choose between staying at traditional ethno-villages and mountain huts, or if you prefer, you can splash out and choose our luxury package instead.

All transport and meals are included for this leg of your holiday, as well as a 24/7 qualified guide who will collect you from Villa Miela and bring you back to Podgorica Airport at the end of your trip.

Your Guides: English couple Ben and Emma have been living and working at Lake Skadar for 10 years, and run Undiscovered Montenegro together from their lovingly restored guesthouse, Villa Miela. Being backpackers who grew up and had children, they are committed to providing all-inclusive, sustainable adventure tourism for all ages and abilities! They both speak near fluent Montenegrin as well as English.

Your Guides: Vuk and Bojana are a brother and sister team who have worked with Undiscovered Montenegro for the last 4 years. They both have a passion for the outdoors and for the North of Montenegro in particular. The more remote the area, the more likely they are to be found exploring it! Vuk and Bojana speak excellent English and have full mountain guide qualifications.

Please note, the itinerary below is for the full 14 night “best of” trip. The 10/11 night options are highlighted in orange, following the Lake Skadar week.

Day 1 – Arrival
Arrival at Lake Skadar and check in to Villa Miela. Group welcome dinner in the evening.

Day 2 – Explore & Discovery
An unforgettable car and hiking combination tour (walking time is 3 hours). We drive past breathtaking views, hike to rock-pools for wild swimming, visit bat-inhabited caves before lunching at a former royal residence in historic Rijeka Crnojevića. We jump back in the 4×4 for more stunning views, wild river swimming and then head across a magnificent plain that would not look out of place in Africa. The breathtaking view from the ancient fort of Žabljak Crnojevića is our final stop before returning to Virpazar.

Day 3 – Kayaking to the island monasteries
This 4-5 hour kayaking trip will take you across Lake Skadar’s stunning mirrored waters from Murići on the southern shores, home to the lake’s best freshwater beach and with views up to the fabled peaks of Albania’s Accursed Mountains. You’ll have the lake all to yourself as you swim in crystal clear waters and visit 14th century island monastaries, still inhabited today, all the while taking in the awesome views.

Day 4 – free day
Free day to spend as you wish. There are so many great options, from kicking back and relaxing in the hot tub at Villa Miela, to taking the bicycles out to explore the valley below, heading to one of the stunning beaches on the nearby Adriatic coast or even visiting UNESCO protected Kotor…

Day 5 – The wines of Lake Skadar Valley
Our local area just happens to be Montenegro’s wine-country. Renowned throughout the Balkans for the smooth red vranac grape, the tradition of wine-making has existed here for centuries. Enjoy tastings and the warmest of welcomes at two boutique wineries we have specially selected for their excellent wines and friendly hospitality, with up to 8 different wines to try. Transport, translation and a meat/cheese platter is included, but you pay the vintners for the tasting direct. Bottles can also be purchased at extra cost.

Day 6 – Waterfall hike in walnut Valley
Our favourite hike – this circular trail passes through ancient woodland, across arched Ottoman bridges and along riverside trails and old Roman caravan paths as it winds its way through one of Lake Skadar’s most beautiful valleys. We stop for wild swimming in natural spring-fed pools before hiking to a beautiful hillside village for lunch with a local family. This is unspoiled and undisturbed nature, with wild figs, herbs and tortoises in abundance! Best of all, you won’t have to share them with other tourists; this is our secret!

Day 7 – free day

Day 8 – Transfer to Kolašin
Transfer to Kolašin, check in to Mirović Apartments. Lunch at eco-restaurant (traditional Montenegrin meal) is followed by a visit to the best and biggest botanical garden in whole Montenegro (optional). Group dinner in the evening.

Day 9 – Ogorela Glava Peak
We start with a gentle 14km walk to Ogorela Glava (1998m above sea level), one of the most attractive peaks of nearby Bjelasica Mountain. First we walk through a beautiful mixed forest to Vranjak eco village, after which Bjelasica will open all its treasures for our eyes: huge pastures, mountain peaks and amazing views of Durmitor National Park. Overnight at Mirović Apartments, group dinner.

Day 10 – Biogradsko Lake/Bendovac
Biogradsko Lake is one of the most beautiful glacial lakes in the whole of Montenegro. Situated in the middle of Biogradska Gora’s virgin forest, this place is the starting point for many attractive hiking tours. One of these is the tour to Bendovac view point (1,770m above sea level) – a rocky hill that provides a spectacular view of the Lake and the whole surrounding area. The road to this place leads us through an amazing forest of tall and many centuries old beech trees. Apart from the breeze, the only sound that you can hear there is birds’ singing! Overnight at Mirović Apartments, group dinner.

Day 11 – Canyoning at Nevidio (not included on 10 night tour)
What’s canyoning? Basically, it’s using ropes to abseil, jump and rappel down tight canyons, through, over – and occasionally, under – waterfalls and plunge pools! It’s awesome fun, and Montenegro has several perfect spots to indulge, including the Nevidio (literally – invisible – as it’s so hidden and slender!) canyon. With full safety gear, wetsuits and go-pros at the ready, this is one adventure you won’t want to miss out on! Overnight at Nevidio Eco-village Apartments, group dinner.

Day 12 – Transfer to Durmitor
Our destination is Žabljak, a small town in the foothills of Durmitor Mountain. Situated at 1,450 metres above sea level, it is the highest town in the whole Balkan Peninsula. This National Park, along with the Tara River is protected by UNESCO. For 3 night tour arrivals there is a short hike to Crno Jezero “Black lake”. For those on the 4 or 7 night variants, we will do the Dragisnica hike. Starting from Dobri Do valley in the Durmitor foothills, the trail leads us near the flow of Komarnica River and all the way to the foot of Boljska Greda, the longest rock in Europe. The 800 metre high vertical cliffs over the beautiful hidden valley will leave you breathless! Don’t be scared if it looks like too much walking for one day – it’s almost all downhill, definitely the best way to earn your dinner! Overnight at Nevidio Eco-village Apartments, group dinner.

Day 13 – Hiking in Durmitor National Park
This day is spent hiking to Prutaš Peak. Embellished by soft stripes of ridges, deep-green and adorned by oblique layers called “prutovi” (wands) – that gave the mountain its name, this peak for many people is the most special and the most beautiful peak of Durmitor Mountain. Hiking time is 6-7 hours. Overnight at Zvono Apartments, group dinner.

Day 14 – White-water rafting!
The Tara Canyon is the deepest in the whole of Europe (second deepest in the world, just after Grand Canyon in Colorado) – the highest point above the canyon floor is 1,331 metres over your head! Because of its beauty, clear water and unspoiled nature, the Tara Canyon deservedly boasts UNESCO World Natural Heritage status. The grade 3-5 rapids (depending on the season) are suitable for almost anyone aged 9 and older and will provide you with a thrill you won’t forget in a hurry! Tour duration: 2-3 hours. Please note that groups of fewer than 6 should expect to join another rafting group. Overnight at Zvono Apartments, group dinner.

Day 15 – return to Podgorica (other destinations will incur an extra transfer charge)

Prices are in £ Sterling per person and include all transport, all activities, all accommodation, all meals and all guiding.

10 night trips run Sunday-Wednesday, 11 night trips run Wednesday-Sunday and 14 night packages run Sunday-Sunday. A 10% discount is available for groups of 4+.
